How to Use a QR Code to Boost Your Event Promotion on Social Media

Promoting your event on social media is one of the most cost-effective ways to build excitement and drive attendance, especially when you're working with a tight budget. One smart and often overlooked tactic? Using a QR code that links directly to your event page.

At MapYourEvent, we believe that small, clever touches can make a big impact. Here’s how you can effectively use a QR code in your social media marketing to maximise reach and make it easier for people to engage.

Your Event QR Code

When you create an event with MapYourEvent, we automatically create a QR code which will link directly to your event. It can be found at the bottom of the Event Information page.

You can download the QR code in 2 formats: SVG and PNG. PNG files are made of pixels, so they can look blurry if you try to make them bigger, but they tend to be easier to use. SVG files are made from shapes and lines, meaning they can scale to any size without losing quality — perfect for larger graphics like posters that need to stay sharp at any size.

1. Add the QR Code to Your Visual Content

Whenever you create graphics for your event, whether it’s a poster, flyer, Instagram Story, or Facebook post, embed the QR code.
This way, people who see your visuals can quickly scan the code and jump straight to your event information page.

  • Use free tools like Canva to create designs and incorporate the code neatly.

  • Keep it prominent but not overpowering — make sure it blends well with your branding.

2. Post a ‘Scan to Learn More’ Story or Reel

Short-form videos and Stories get high engagement.
Create a 10–15 second clip showing the QR code with a simple call to action like "Scan to RSVP!" or "Unlock Event Details Here."

  • Add music, countdown stickers, or animated arrows to draw attention to the QR code.

  • Feature the QR code as a “swipe up” alternative for accounts without the swipe feature.

3. Use It in Your Profile Links and Bio Highlights

You can’t upload a QR code directly into your Instagram bio, but you can:

  • Share a Story featuring the QR code and save it as a Highlight titled "Event Info."

  • Pin a Facebook or LinkedIn post with the QR code image at the top of your page.

This way, anyone visiting your profile instantly sees a quick action they can take.

4. Incentivise Scans with a Giveaway

Encourage interaction by offering a small prize or exclusive benefit to those who scan the QR code and sign up.

  • For example: "Scan this code and register to win free VIP access!"

  • Track entries by using a simple form linked from the QR code destination.

This taps into word-of-mouth marketing — one of the most powerful, low-cost strategies we highlight at MapYourEvent.

5. Collaborate with Local Partners

Partner with local businesses, community groups, or influencers.
Ask them to post your QR code on their social feeds, or even physically in their venues, combining both online and offline reach.

  • Offer them a small perk (like event tickets) in exchange for the promo help.

  • Share a ready-to-go graphic they can easily repost, making it effortless for them to assist.

And Finally...

QR codes bridge the gap between curiosity and action. They remove friction, making it faster for people to sign up, learn more, or share your event with others.
And the best part? We create the QR code for you and using it costs almost nothing — a perfect fit for grassroots event promotion strategies we champion at MapYourEvent.

So give QR event promotion a try.
